Things to do around Hartlepool

My family and I are stopping at the Park Resorts site just above Hartlepool (Crimdon Dene)
I've got my eye on the Tanfield Railway for something to do for one day.
Has anyone any ideas of what to do in this area? Money isn't a massive object but if anyone knows of any money saving tips they would be much appreciated. Just one thing, we do have a dog so would need to be dog friendly.
Thanks in advance

Thanks - that looks a good start - will probably spend a day in Hartlepool I'd guess anyway.

Thanks for that. I went there last year and really enjoyed it.
