Let's not forget though that the OP came on here slandering MBNA for "terrible customer service" when in fact they have only stuck to their agreement and have NOT provided terrible customer service. It's probably that kind of sensationalist headline that generates this kind of unsympathetic response.

They wont care that your leaving been honest, your missed the payment date so paid the price
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

MBNA ended up being nice, so I thought it fair to update:

Immediately after speaking to MBNA the first time I organised a transfer to another provider within 24 hours (I had a card sitting empty with a 24 month 0% balance transfer offer on it). Three days later a nice chap called and apologised if he thought I'd had a bad experience. He noted that I'd transferred over 90% of the balance and informed me that they would be crediting my account with the interest that had been charged and the late fees also.

The credits hit my account today, so whilst they didn't have to, they did, because they agreed that I had made a mistake, but could see it was obviously a mistake and were keen to keep my custom. MBNA is now my empty card, but I'll keep it open after that.

So if something similar happens to you, give them a call, they're obviously open to reason.

Thanks for updating OP - quite a useful tip too, that if normal pleading doesn't work at enticing goodwill gestures out of them, then sometimes actions rather than threats of actions speak louder than words.

Useful to know there's another avenue for goodwill gestures.
