What's Majorca like?

I'd love some advice on Majorca from anyone who's been, please! We're looking to go somewhere warm next month (inc. good ocean swimming temps) and Ryanair flies to Palma from where we are. Spain-wise, we've been to the Barcelona region and loved it (good coffee, good drives in the country, old stuff to visit) and have been to a part of Murcia (Mazarron) and did not love it (tackily built-up, full of run-down cafes advertising full English breakfasts/cheap strip malls/neon signs/etc - it was geared toward tourists but in a very uninspiring way).
I don't know anyone who's been to Majorca, so I'm trying to find out what it's like there. Is it full or resorts and/or nightclubs? Is it tacky like the afore-mentioned part of Murcia? I'm trying to avoid somewhere that's completely manufactured, for lack of a better description, although a resort with a great beach might be OK.
It's sometimes hard to get a feel for a place through online research alone, so many thanks in advance if you can help...

Majorca is a big island, parts of it are tacky parts are not.
The least tacky seaside resort is Puerto Soller but it isn't cheap. If you go down to the woods today you better not go alone.0 -
If you look closely you will find that it is spelled with two "l"s not a "j".
Palma is an often overlooked city as many visitors head straight for the beach but it is worth a visit especially if you want to avoid the tacky resorts.0 -

Thanks for the Palma advice, but as for the other bit, it's either unless you'd argue entirely against using anglicised terms for other places and peoples. For example, the Germans know their country as Deutschland, but it seems fine for people over here to keep calling it Germany.0 -
Another vote for Soller and the port area. The other decent resorts have been taken over by the chavs and the Germans0

I spent a few days in Palma last year and really enjoyed it. I went in the spring so it was off peak without a huge amount of tourists.
There's a train from Palma to Soller which isn't a bad trip. I didn't get as far as Soller but stopped at Bunyola which is great for walking in the hills. The timing of the trains (from Palma, at least) means that I didn't get to spend as long there as I'd have liked. Had I researched I'd have booked overnight accomodation there. A walking trip mightn't be to your liking but if it is you could do worse than a day or two stay here.0 -
Got the worst hay fever of my life in Majorca, put me off for life.
Pollensa on the north of the island is nice. Avoid Magalluf.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages, student & coronavirus Boards, money saving boards. I am a lover of Mallorca. I've stayed in Santa Ponsa - OK but probably wouldn't go back there again. Definitely didn't like Palma Nova as it had far too many Brits there.
Love Alcudia. Been there numerous times and at various times throughout the year too. Fabulous beach, wide and stretches right round to C'an Picafort. The Port end of town is nicer but the beach is better in Alcudia and gets narrower and the sea slightly rougher and deeper the nearer C'an Picafort you get. Old town Alcudia is lovely albeit very busy in the Summer. Pollenca is a lovely place but the beach isn't as nice IMO.0 -
I liked Santa Ponsa - easy reach of Palma by bus and the beach is gorgeous and as it's a bay very warm and clear.
Very much a mix of nationalities - but a resort of two halves- one side very lively and the other quieter and more sedate.I Would Rather Climb A Mountain Than Crawl Into A Hole
MSE Florida wedding .....no problem0 -
Mallorca is a bit like marmite, but I love it. Been many times.
Love Palma, especially the hotels on the marina. Shops and art galleries brill
Like Palma Nova, different than Magaluf, is more family orientated, you don't have to eat in the british places if you don't want to.
Alcudia/Playa del muro/ C'an picafort - amazing beach with beautiful sea, but loads of mozzies !
Puerto Pollenca - Lovely little place.
I am off there in 4 weeks to Santa Ponsa for first time on my own, but am doing a Diving course there, so it will be Dive daytime, study nighttime. Never stayed there, but not worried about all the Brit bars, will find a few Spanish places.
Don't be put off, it is a wonderful Island.0
