Claimed PPI repayment but Credit card company says records no longer available

I recently contacted an old credit card provider (Amex) but received a reply saying that they did not keep records gong back that far.
It was quite a while ago (1995-6) and I have no records remaining either.
I have a feeling I did pay PPI in those days - is thee anything I can do?
