Changing a storm porch to an external porch???

I've seen a house I'm interested in buying but a 'must have' for me is an external porch, this house has a porch roof and one porch wall and I was wondering if it would be a 'big job' to fully enclose it? I've never done any alterations to a house before so am a bit naive when it comes to level of work involved/costs etc

Get in touch with a builder for an estimate of the work. However, some aren't willing to quote without viewing the property. Sure you'll be able to get a rough idea/ estimate if it's possible.

I printed a list from the Checkatrade in our area and rang them all. :D

Thanks, I didn't think a builder would be interested in quoting due to it being a potential purchase rather than a house I own. Will have a look at check-a-trade.
  • Thanks, G_M - I did look at the other board but as I don't have a quote due to not having bought yet thought this might be more appropriate.

Will have a look at the links provided :)

I'm sure they won't mind giving you an idea of a cost even without a quote - unless they're a balshie lot like us of course!

Looks like job for a double glazing company, if you want it to be one. They wouldn't do bricks, but they might know a man who does.

Its plausible yes. We have a storm porch and considered it, however for the amount of money that would be spent, it would give is only a small, potential awkward area in return and was not worth it.

Plus, I actually prefer the storm porch compared to a small porch, allows you to dart from the car in the rain, then you can faff around with opening the door!

Another vote from me for just keeping a canopy, so you can dash to it in the rain when you're fiddling to get the right key out!

... But if you insist on having it enclosed, yes I think one window and one door from a window company would be all that's required.

It depends a lot on which way it faces. Our front porch faces north, while most of our 'weather' comes from between south and west. We've decided not to enclose the front and to have a 'proper' wooden door, as it will hardly ever receive a battering.
