Non driver with vehicle question

My wife & I are non-drivers but have a vehicle road tax question. If a vehicle is due for road tax on June 1st, can one re-tax it anytime before the date?, or do you have to wait untill say, 7 days before ?.

Also, we know of a vehicle that has a road tax dated 31/12/04 and is still on the road. Not being driven, but simply parked. It is half parked on the pavement and half on the road. Further to that, it has a smashed wing mirror.

Look forward to your reply. islandman

Would rely on a central data store. Me thinks it is for cars less than 3 years old and a central insurance data store.

I actually reported it to the police 2/3 weeks ago as have others. Problem is, it is owned by the daughter of a policeman !!!!!!

Basically, you report the vehicle to the police as abandoned. They come along, stick a sticker on it and in 3 months will tow it away.

A vehicle can have an out of date car tax disc if it is off the road. Once it has been taxed, it can then return to the road.

The car you describe sounds similar to one that was dumped outside our house near a junction last year. Gypsies had abandoned it in the most inconvenient position possible. It was about 3 months before it got towed and crushed.

If a car tax disc expires on 31 May, you can renew it any time during the month of May by taking your vehicle registration form, insurance certificate and MOT certificate to your local post office. I haven't tried the online service, so I can't comment.

    Hope this helps

You do not report what appear to be abandoned vehicles to the Police. They are the responsibilty of your local council as they are classified as waste.

Report the vehicle to your local council and normally they will be able to arrange for its removal within 14 - 21 days and often quicker. See http://www.defra.gov.uk/environment/waste/topics/abandonvehicle.htm for a bit more info.

There is also the offence of having an unlicenced vehicle on the public highway, but that is separate from the issue of whether it has been abandoned. Depending upon how your local council classify this vehicle they will either take it straight away for scrap or make enquiries of the DVLA regrading ownership, at which time the DVLA will flag it up as unlicenced and will then generally allow it to be taken away. Also the police could issue a summons but from what you have said sounds unlikely. But then it doesn't really matter.

So get on to your local council straight away and get it reported. If you google “abandoned vehicles" you will get links to most of the local council web sites giving details of abandoned vehicles and how to report them. Or otherwise just go straight to your local council's web site and look for the info there.

    Good Luck

Where I use to live them would put an orange sticker on giving the warning that they it will be removed with in 7 days.

I once did this and cheeky beggars only parked it on a drive of a empty house for sale. So they never bothered to remove it.

    I could not believe it.

So I reported to the Estate Agents selling the property. I then went away for 3 weeks came back to find it was gone. Even though the house had not been sold.

The council don't care who the car belongs to.

We've had a series of tax-expired cars dumped outside our and our neighbour's house. Unusually, neither of us own cars, so there's sometimes parking space outside our house, which is probably why we've been targeted. However, we hire a car or van sometimes and quite like to park outside our own house! That or our other neighbours like to park closer to their homes. Anyway, if you report it to the DVLA (tel: 08000 325202 Mon-Fri 9-5), then the the owner gets hassled. Reporting to the council also helps. Good luck

btw, I'd love to know what this series of tax-expired car dumpings is all about - anyone got any ideas? Some scam or another, I'm sure

If it's not taxed it must have a "Stautory Off Road Notification" (SORN) instead, even if it is always only on private land.

so it should certainly be got rid of!

Actualy it is for cars of any age, provided:

    - Your insurance company is one that provides the details to the government database.
    - If the car needs an MOT, it has been done at one of the MOT stations that now record the details on the government database.

Few MOT stations are linked up at the moment, but eventualy all will be.

I re-taxed my (newish) car recently using the system, and it certainly beats queuing up in the Post Office.
