Travel insurance question

Hi there

I read the travel insurance thread on the main site and I have looked at various options. I am going to Spain next month and also to South Africa later in the year. I have been looking at single trip vs multi and all that.

One area that I am a little unclear on is personal belongings. I have an iPhone and windows tablet and also a camera. I will be able to show receipts for these, but the policies all seem to exclude phones and I am worried about claiming for things like this and also the amounts that they all offer.

Has anyone had success with good, inexpensive travel insurance for this sort of issue?

Thanks so much
Edelweiss

I think you have 3 choices. 1} check your home insurance to see if phones are covered on that policy 2} buy a cheap phone for the holiday and leave iphone at home 3} phone travel insurance company and ask the cost of adding the phone as an extra.

Thank you! I don't have home insurance (I rent in shared accomm) and I need to take the phone, I'll go with option 3. Good idea, thanks.

The general assumption is that electronic things are covered by your home insurance, so travel insurance tends to exclude them.

I'd suggest that you get annual insurance so that you are covered on your SA trip should you need to cancel (eg for medical reasons) after booking.

In that case you need worldwide cover.

Which begs the question, if OP's electronics aren't covered by insurance in the UK, why would they need them to be covered while abroad?
Why makes OP think there would be any greater likelihood of loss or theft when they are abroad?
Keep electronics in hand luggage and they won't get lost in transit.
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

I found that curious too. I wondered if there was some sort of insurance as OP stressed shared and rented.

    Hi there

Re the questions above, I find that a bit odd. When you travel you hand things over to an airline and you hope and trust they won't lose them. You cart things around on buses and trains and you leave them in strange hotel rooms that you hope and trust are safe. You do none of these things at home. I know our home is safe. Of course it is not 100%, nowhere is, but it is a whole lot safer than some place I have never been before. When you travel you are also out of your normal routine and comfort zone.

Keep them in your hand luggage and you don't need to worry about the airline losing them. (Commonly, insurance won't cover valuables in hold luggage anyway)
Do you never use buses/trains in the UK?
Would you really leave your iPhone in your hotel room? Don't most people carry their phone with them
If you need to leave valuables in your room, book accommodation that has an in-room safe or safety deposit boxes available. (Insurance may not cover items that have just been left lying around in a hotel room)
If you are not confident you can keep your valuables safe outside of 'your normal routine and comfort zone', maybe it would be prudent not to take them.
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

I agree. OP is talking iPhone, tablet and camera so quite portable items that he could easily keep with him or put in hotel safe. If you really want it on travel insurance then call the company an ask which they'll probably do at a price.
