How much does a driving instructor earn?

I've heard they make around £30k but a new instructor would best go through a school in which case they make as little as £15k a year after all the costs such as fuel, maintenance, servicing, repairs, etc.

Of course after about two years you could go it alone and then realistically make towards the £30k figure.

I wouldnt mind giving it a go but not if I'm coming out with less than I'm on.

Either that or become an auto electrician.

I've a couple of friends who because driving instructors and they, and the majority of their fellow driving instructors, all regret becoming one.

In reality they do only earn around £15-£19. It would take a lot of years to earn a reputation and build a client base to go it alone. Even then there is a lot of competition for business.

I couldn't think of anything worse than being a driving instructor.

I'd rather be a P.E teacher than a Driving instruction which says something.

Thank you, that did make me chuckle.

I guess I'll research the auto electrician role instead.

I have a close friend who is a DI. The lesson price is £23 / hour. (Less if you block book). You are realistcally unlikely to get more than 6 hours tuition in a day. Take out car hire/leasing/loan repayment, insurance, fuel, servicing, fees to your Driving School, days when you can't work because of the snow, holidays, etc.

Realistcally you are on minimum wage, if that.

The £30k headline is a Gross income. Your net pay will be much, muchless.

Yeah I thought it was too good to be true.

Seems to be more or less the same story with the auto electrician.

If I had to re-start life and was 18 again. I would definitely do an apprenticeship to be a plumber, electrician, engineer that type of thing. There are so many opportunities.

I once saw an advertisement for the British Antarctica Research base that wanted plumbers and electricians to fit out their base. They provided a salary (possibly tax-free?), accommodation, food and flight fees not to the mention the experience and prestige of working there.

and I keep hearing about amazing opportunities for such roles.

^^^If anyone's still looking for work after 18 months... :-$

    (spammer necro)
  • I guess this kind of job is for the person that wants part time work or flexi hours. As others said the 30k is the gross, then the net can be below min wage - not for the faint hearted
  • Happy new year

Did you ever decide to train to become an instructor?

You wont be earning 30k because there are not enough hours in the day. I remember when i used to take my lessons, my instructor would literally fall asleep because he was so overworked, i also took it as a compliment.

He eventually left (the company he worked for is a primary colour) and started his own thing. Not sure how that went, hopefully well.
