For what classes of cover? PI? PL? EL? BI? Property? Product? Contents? Motor?

vSME market has a few direct providers like Direct Line for Business but is still dominated by the broker market and so cross compare a couple of the direct players with a good local broker other than Swintons.

Product Liabilty may cover you if your product causes damage or injury.

Public Liability would cover you if you are visiting customers premises to fit the blinds or if you have customers coming to you.

If you employ anyone then Employers Liability too.

Try https://www.insuranceoctopus.co.uk - they are a broker but I've used them before with no problems.

Motor insurance - whether you have a van or car you'll need business use.

Employers Liability Insurance if you employ anyone.

Are you working from home - do your home insurers know?

    Public/products liability.
    Loss/damage for stock.
    Goods in transit.
Mobile equipment such as laptop, phone, tablet etc.

Try googling 'working from home insurance'. Depending on the size of your business, and if you are working from home, you may be able to extend your home insurance to include a business package.

Income protection in case you can't work.

Try popping along to your local broker, it's good to keep business local if practical as it keeps the money in your local economy.

You can also build up a longer term relationship with them which can be handy for obtaining favours from them and you'll also find it handy to be able to ask them to explain anything you don't understand.

You may also find they're handy for referring business to your or for business contacts as they tend to know all the local businessmen

If you don't feel comfortable with your local broker find another.
