What make of router do you have ?

You should be able to reset the router back to its factory settings so you can then start the process again

Connect using the Ethernet cable and log-in.

    I have D-LINK DSL-604T

I can see the connection is working, but it just won't let me in again, it asks me for a network key- I thought that was the really long line of numbera and letters, but that doesn't seem to let me in

They are supplied with an Ethernet cable and that is the recommended way to set them up. Read the user manual.

Well you need to get a short Ethernet cable and you can download the user manual from their support pages on the website.

Even if you reset the router you will need the network cable to set it up!

Don't know how you'd reset it. Is it possible?

otherwise, yeah, you need a cable. Plug it in, log in to the router and lookup the key in settings.
