... a current account cannot be closed over the phone..Let them say bye... they can't close your account over the phone. You'd have to close it via branch, or writing in.
Thats not correct. It depends on the bank; some of them will close an account over the phone. HSBC and First Direct both provide for this in their terms and conditions:

34 Ending this framework contract and closing your account
34.1 Unless additional conditions apply, you can end this framework contract (section 1 of the General Terms) with us at any time, by writing or phoning us, by going into your local branch, or via Online Banking.
34.3 If this framework contract is ended ..... your account will close.."0 -
During account opening the incorrect card has been selected from the drop down list; after all the account opening process isn't without human interaction even if done via telephone or online.
Unlike some poster(s) on here, there is no need to threaten to leave the bank. Ring and request the card as you either need or require it. If they decline file a complaint - HSBC don't particularly like complaints - as according to they state you'll get a contactless card.
Personally, I hate contactless cards as their usage doesn't immediately reflect in your actual balance so can make budgeting a nuisance. HSBC have just 'upgraded' me to one and won't downgrade, so I'll just use it the old fashioned way.
Sorry for reviving the thread (although hopefully 10 days isn't enough to get me stick for doing so) but I believe (caveat - I don't know for a fact) that if you push back and outright demand a non-contactless card, they can still issue one.
Don't know why you wouldn't want them though, personally I'm a big fan. If you don't like the contactless feature just don't use it.
N.b. I appreciate some people are concerned, in some ways quite rightly, with the security of contactless.0
