USB ports (2) dead on HP laptop - repair?

My laptop slipped off car's backseat and landed on floor - USB mouse was inserted and it probably landed on the USB connection. Since then the mouse would not work so I thought that was the problem. However, the mouse works on my desktop and no USB devices are working in the laptop.
This is therefore a hardware problem, but I have no idea as to fixing it. It may be a new part or simply something that's loose (though both ports are out of action). What kind of costs might be involved? The laptop is about 4 years old.
Sorry if I have not been clear.

I don't know I'm afraid, but it might be useful to post the model number of the laptop involved, as it might affect the answer.0

The ony way to get a cost is to either open it up yourself or take it to a local repair shop, if your lucky, its jsut the port has come loose from the solder and should only be a few quid for parts plus labour, if your unlucky, its damaged the main board and for a 4 year old machine, is probably going to cost more to repair than its worth.
Do you have any other working ports on the machine? a USB hub might be an option if you do.

As none of the ports are working there is a high probability you have either cracked the circuit board or caused a short that may have damaged part of the USB circuit. If you are lucky the USB ports may have micro fuse protection which is straight forward for a competent PC engineer to fix and shouldn't be too expensive, 1hr labour plus parts.
Exact model of laptop ?Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.0 -
Thanks for the responses. It is an HP Presario CQ61 model. There is a third USB port on the left side which is working.
In Device Manager, all entries under USB say things are working properly. Is this expected?0 -

USB sockets are normally soldered direct to the mobo, but the CQ61 has a separate USB daugher board with twin USB sockets on it.. Give you said both ports, the best guess is its got damaged or detached, and just needs to be opened up to check the cable and the connector as still conencted. It may just need to be re-connected.0 -
As gjchester said above there is a separate daughter board.
Here is a link to the HP service and maintenance guide for the CG61, see page 4-34 for diagram:
