Travel time from Farnborough Hants to Waterloo is 40 mins from Wimbledon to Waterloo is 20 mins. I would have though travel time at both ends is similar.

    Farnborough Waterloo yearly £3656
    Wimbledon Waterloo £936

1 bed flat walking distance of station http://www.rightmove.co.uk/new-homes-for-sale/property-50207434.html

    1 bed flat Wimbledon http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-51782912.html?premiumA=true

That's a lot (which was my point) especially if there are 2 people doing 20 hours each so have to pay 2 train fairs.

The difference in mortgage would be £7800 a year

The difference in fairs is about £270 a month the difference in rent for I bed is about £400. So not really worth doing if both of you need to commute.

I'm not sure i'd classify the Farnborough one as walking distance, it'd be 25-30 minutes (which isn't going to be fun during winter) add that on to the 40 minute train to Waterloo and you may as well start looking at Portsmouth/Basingstoke.

Both flats are about the same distance to station and it's definitely walking distance 0.8 miles. You could easily face same problem in Basingstoke or Portsmouth. If you fancy saving £46k and being nearer station http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-34900314.html

Guys, when I see hardworking families squashed into terraces and squashed into 13 year old small "compact family" cars; then I see boomers pull up to 4 bed detached houses in their 14 plate Nissan Qashqais, and saunter down the drive to enjoy spacious living with one or no other people, or an exchange student who they rent as a lodger; it just makes me so mad.

Is London really relevant to people born in the UK? If the Migration Observatory are to be believed, hardly any Brits live there, just 7.9 people out of every 100 in 2013. (Source; http://www.migrationobservatory.ox.ac.uk/briefings/migrants-uk-overview)

Yes, housing in London is super expensive, but then hardly any of us want to live there, - and presumably most of those that do already have their home - so does it really matter?

Though, having said that, a friend of ours lives in Dover, 1 hour from London on a high speed train. His cost per year to get into work? A very expensive (to me) just over £5k per year!! Lucky he works only a good 20 minutes walk from the station he arrives at. I did suggest to him he could always work in Heathrow, so he could experience the London tube at rush hour.

He was saying to me that Dover isn't that cheap for housing, though I thought this looked a bargain:

In spite of the house prices, I would rather move jobs than give up £5k after tax of my income each year not to mention 2 to 3 hours travelling to and from work each day (by the time you factor in getting to the station and waiting for trains). I understand why he lives in Dover, but why work in London? Surely the south east has loads of work?

Having moved around and worked in many parts of the South East, I can say that the pay is world of difference higher in London than even the most salubrious parts of SE. That is probably a big draw certainly. I moved from West Sussex, through parts of Kent to Zone 6 Greater London. I think for me this is the sweet spot - 15 minutes from central London on the train but house prices relatively affordable with space, big gardens, drives, etc.

I actually looked all over central London and could not find a better commute (especially as I have to work in different parts of London at times). You cut down your options if you go too far in - mainline trains can get you into many main stations in London and are often quicker than tubes and much nicer. I also much prefer to have the countryside on my doorstep while having London near enough should I want to go there.

Of course, house prices are growing rapidly in these areas now and the strangest thing I have noticed is that rent is incredibly high compared to house prices.
To err is human, but it is against company policy.

I know it winds me up when I look at my kids with their new BMWs and 4 bed houses. They must be doing something wrong as children of a boomer.
