JSA entitlement

Please could someone offer some advice?

My partner lost his job 2 weeks ago, he is being paid for 4 weeks at his basic wage, so we will stop receiving pay for him in about 2 weeks. He has always worked full time, aside from being out of work for around 6 months 4 years ago.

I work full time, 37.5hrs per week, and earn £29k. We have around £13k in savings but they are in account in my name only. We live in a shared ownership house (mortgage for 50%).

Looking online it seems he may not be entitled to JSA due to my income / working hours /savings. Does anyone know for sure?

Thanks.

He should get contribution based for 6 months if he has worked for the last 4 or so years and paid NIC , after this he will go onto income based and its very likely that on your wages and savings he will not get income based.

Your savings even under your name will be used as part of the means testing as it forms part of the household income/capital.

Any other means tested benefits will be calculated on your household income and savings as you are a couple which means that apart from cont based JSA he cannot claim anything as a single person .

He will still have to sign on to get his national insurance credits even if he is not getting any money, will still have to job seek and can still be sanctioned

How can they sanction him, he will be claiming nothing?.

    NI credits aren't nothing.

They can't sanction you NI credits unless they stopped you signing on altogether because they deemed you to be not looking for work. Whether NI credits are anything depends upon your circumstances. You only need 35 years of credits to get a full pension, you may have them already, or may get them in later years; it would be unusual to not get 35 years credits in a working life of 45-50 years unless you had worked abroad.

You're entering a world of pain for very little gain.

At the moment it's 35 years, before that it was 30. Before that it was 39/45 - who knows what it'll be in the future?
