Can I convert a regular cistern into a concealed one?

My question is as simple as that. We are giving our bathroom a makeover and were all set to buy a whole new toilet. We have since realised that because of where the waste pipe is we'd need to put a box in at the back of the new cistern.
Now the toilet pan itself is in pretty good condition but the old cistern looks dated and is plastic. Can I just box that over? Is there a new button that I could purchase that I could extend into the new boxing?
Looking forward to your responses.

Our loo is all boxed in, but it was still a handle out the front of the boxing that operated the flush. I purchased one of these...

And it took a while, spilt a lot of water, but ultimately got it all sorted and now have a push button flush on the top of the boxing in.
As noted above, you might need access in future. So don't box it in too well! I used a small piece of worktop. It just rests on the top of the boxing in. I ran a bead of silicone under the lip on the front. And it does not move. But if we ever need access, a quick slice with a stanley knife and it will be off. And then a new line of sealant.
I tried for ages to find an offcut of a kitchen to use, but after a couple of months I gave up. Cheapest I found new was the following:
