Parks & Dogs

So Belfast are/have been looking into it and now Mid and East Antrim Borough Council has launched a consultation process over the plans for dog exclusion zones.

As a dog owner I am actually in favour of Exclusion Zones and Restricted Zones.
SOME Dog owners have to realise that not all people like dogs and even those that do are not always partial to them bounding up and jumping all over them or running around them/their family.

I'm of the opinion that those who complain that "how can they get their dogs exercised if these rules are brought in" are those who can't be bothered to do a bit of exercise themselves and actually walk their dogs and instead are happy sitting on their rear ends throwing a tennis ball for them around a park.

I am also of the view that it would reduce the amount of Dog Mess around the place as those dogs off their leads are never being watched all the time and thus when they do a poop the owners are usually 20 odd yards further ahead and don't bother their behind going back to pick it up. I see this soooooo many times in the Ormeau park & Cherryvale park

I'm 100% behind the view that they should be 100% kept off sports pitches also... It really is not pleasant having the kids kicking the ball around and it landing (or indeed them landing) in a load of dog mess..... No much fun either for local sports clubs having to walk the pitches looking for Dog Turds before playing a game...

I'm afraid the actions of a few have essentially ruined it for the many responsible owners....

I totally agree with the sports areas being dog free zones. My son played for 2 years in the Lisburn League and for 2 years in the South Belfast league, the amount of dog crap is disgusting. Not to mention dogs running on to pitches and the kids being terrified.
Over the years there has been a slight improvement but we all look forward to a Saturday morning playing on pitches which are now fenced off.

I am in full agreement with it as well, as long as there are still plenty of spaces that dogs are allowed as they do need exercised.

I would also support timed zones, dogs are allowed at certain times and not at others.

Parks and public places are for sharing, and many people are afraid of dogs ( or allergic) and many dogs have irresponsible owners who allow their jobs to jump on others while telling them, don't worry he won't hurt you.

HUGE (pardon the pun) pet hate of mine!!!

That along with having dogs off the lead coming running up and torturing mine when I'm out for a walk. I never have mine of the lead in public as he is a large German Shepherd and a lot of people are afraid of them rightly or wrongly for various different reasons..... He's a big jessie to be honest (though I don't tell people that... not good for the street cred.... ) but I wouldn't dream of letting him off the lead in a public park and telling people "oh he's all right, he's harmless"..... Completely irresponsible !!!

Speaking as a dog owner (two retrievers) - dogs shouldnt be off their leads in public areas full stop. Far to many uncontrolled dogs bounding about jumping up on people, intimidating other dogs on leads and pooing wherever suits.

And too many owners who turn a blind eye to their dogs antics, particularly when theres the possibility of having to carry a bag of poo with them to the nearest bin.

I noticed on a recent walk with our two dogs that someone had bagged up their dogs poo and then dropped the bag at the side of the path! Do these people think theres poo pixies who come at night and pick up these bags??

I'm also a dog owner and I'm disgusted by the antics of some irresponsible dog owners near where I live. I walk my dog twice a day and clean up behind him, but there's never a stretch of footpath where I don't have to dodge dog mess every 50-100 yards.

As for those who drop the bags immediately that's just lazy, if you're that sensitive about carrying it, then put it in a second bag, it's not difficult!

I'm unreliably informed that they tissue type all dogs in Monte Carlo so they can identify which hound dropped which dung. Then they come and nail the owner.

I heard something on the radio the other day where there was a discussion on this subject. Apparently some dog owners who have received penalties based on hearsay from members of the public have contested them by getting the dog warden to take a sample of the offending poo and get it DNA tested and matched with the DNA of their dog. I am not sure where this happened. It could have been here or the US or the Continent.

Im not a dog lover, in fact I've a bit of a phobia regarding dog hairs, or any animal hairs for that matter. Hate getting covered with hair or even a single one for that matter so I hate it when out walking and somones pet jumps up all over me. If there were 10 other people in the vicinity I think the dogs would single me out to jump on. You always get the " he wont touch you" from the owners, which means nothing and dosnt address the issue that not everyone wants a dog jumping all over them. Dont even start me about fouling. Someone said at the start about a few irresponsible owners spoiling it for everyone, but my experience is that more people will let the dirt lie rather than lift it. I dont think enough is being done to stop this and make people accountable
I started out with nothing......And still have most of it left:p

    Have you got a shotgun?

I remember years ago when I lived in Derry someone who had similar opinions left poisoned sausages round shantallow and sorted the stray dog problem out in a couple of days. The story was an angry parent had had a child bitten. There was more fuss than there was after any murders.
