Tablet or ereader help please?

I am looking to buy a cheapie (posibly 2ndhand) device just for holiday time later in the year. I want to be able to read books, listen to music currently on laptop and ipod and take photos too. All very simple stuff, but I've never used one and don't know what to go for - I understand from some web research that some e-readers can play music, but what about photos? Then also read that the screens on tablets are not as easy on the eyesight for lots of reading. Any and all advise much appreciated.

Tablet screens in sunlight: forget it for reading (if you are taking a beach holiday).
If so you'll do much better with a dedicated e-reader using an e-ink display.No free lunch, and no free laptop
