Skimming over artex ceilings with coving

Looking to get all the ceilings skimmed in my house soon to get rid of artex. All the rooms also have coving. If I rip down the covering will the plasterer be able to skim the top part of the wall to repair the mess or in order to do this would the whole wall need skimming also?

I have seen coving fixed with masonry nails, others fixed with GripFill, others fixed with coving adhesive so there cannot be a definite answer. The money saving solution is to remove the coving then make good any damaged areas of plaster as part of the re-decorating of the room. Basically use decorators filler and good paint.

Thanks. I will start with the bathroom as I will be tiling to the ceiling there anyway so good room to test how much mess I will be looking at.

The coving was put on when the house was built in early 90's

I just wondered if the plasterer is skimming ceilings anyway is it much more extra work for them to sort the top bits of the wall at the same time.

I don't trust my own filling ability as I am fussy and would want a nice flat finish.

My experience is that good plasterers are highly sought after. What you are requesting is plaster patching. Many plasterers would not be enthused by this, and would prefer to be on the next job, However, if you lay down your requirements and pay accordingly you may get a satisfactory job here. That is why I would be tackling this work myself - all it takes is a methodical approach plus rubbing down filler,

Not an expert on plastering but I pay for enough of them but if you polybond the ceiling with lets say a watery PVA mix thats 5:1 water PVA then the plasterer can key to it I think he will skim out with bonding first its a type of plaster will fill the gaps and leave a semi smooth finish for taking the skim .
But some plasterers may just go straight on with Multi finish . but will probably put a coat of PVA on first thick let it go off untill tacky then plaster . As said not a expert or plasterer but its not a problem if you have very high points get scraper and cut off . but put the weak PVA mix on it soaks in and keys especially if its matt emulsion .
This may be of help or a plasterer may say Rubbish I have been renovating for 20 years but I always pay for plasterers and good ones you will be surprised how many say they are untill finished and then I go my god should done it my self LOL

Best bet would be to keep the coving If you can live with it and get the plasterer to skim thinly to the coving edge.Removing the coving usually causes a lot of damage especially on dry wall.
Plaster is not ideal for patching the top edge of the wall as it is not really suitable to feather out thinly. The best material will be easi-fill for this as it can be applied really thin and rubbed down. The plasterer would do this but will add a fair bit of time to the job
