As Guest101 has already explained, the term "professionally cleaned," is meaningless.
There isn't a City & Guilds qualification for cleaning. There's no professional body for cleaners that ensure they meet a certain standard like you get for solicitors, accountants or engineers.
Someone who works as a cleaner is no more qualified or experienced to brandish a vacuum cleaner than you or I.
If you disagree with the check-out inventory then challenge it. Challenge their deductions using the deposit protection scheme.
It costs nothing for you to use the scheme's arbitration service if you disagree with the proposed deductions.0 -
I'm just stunned that BT (or any other provider) would do anything for free, especially when there's nothing in it for them.It's someone else's fault.0

Guest101 - The other charges are about £100 for carpet cleaning, we steam cleaned them ourselves, but the inventory clerk said they weren't as clean as they should be, and they were professionally cleaned when we moved in. And about £40 for other cleaning charges - a bit in the oven, a few doors which need wiping down etc. It's all backed up by the check in and check out inventories.
LateStarter - this is what I've said to the agent, so we'll see what they come back with!

If you cleaned them to a standard which matches what was when you moved in, less wear and tear, then you owe nothing.0 -
BT will never do this for free: the OR minimum call out charge is £130, not £48.
And they're not doing it 'so they can reinstall it for the next tenant and charge again', because the OR charge for a new line provision or a reconnection is exactly the same, regardless of the work involved.
So my conclusion is that the LL is charging an arbitrary sum for work that will not actually be carried out.No free lunch, and no free laptop

Macman, I think you've hit the nail on the head. The £48 is based on a quote from a decorating contractor who has said they remove it and make good.
BT told us they would do it for free when we moved our contract to our new home. I think it was part of their ploy to keep our business, as we were saying we would change provider.0 -

Think there's some confusion in your post:
1: the OP has got it done for free. The agent cant be lying about that.
2: most likely the £48 is a ' what can we get away with charging' fee. so i agree on that.
3: The LL does not have to have work carried out. For example if the tenant had damaged a chair, the LL does not have to replace the chair, simply he is taking a financial equivalent for his 'lost use' of the chair.0 -
