Admin charge for using credit card

I have just tried to use my credit card to pay for a survey on a property. The surveying company sent me a letter telling me I could pay by bank transfer, credit card or debit card. There was no mention of an "additional charge" for using a credit card. When paying over the phone they asked me for my card details, when halfway through the long number I was interrupted and asked what sort of card was I using. When I replied a credit card I was told there was an additional 2% charge for using the credit card. My query is should they have stated in their letter that a 2% charge was applicable to credit card payments and not wait until I was actually paying before informing me of this. Incidentally, I aborted the payment and will pay later by other means that does not incur an additional charge.

Not really an issue with your Credit Card is it? more of an issue with the survey company.

Morally I think they should, but they told you before you paid, so apart from a bit of Sympathy over your disappointment I don't think you can expect much.
  • Lol I wonder if the OP will try to sue for "upset", "distress" or something even more sinister?!

Seriously I wonder if people can't just try to enjoy life rather than whine about literally anything.

Is a charge of 2% to pay by card really something to get upset by?!?!?!

They told you before you paid so you could have paid a different way, it's not an admin charge, it's the cost to them from the merchant.

If you didn't know already you should now consider yourself informed that the vast majority of the service, leisure etc industry charge for their CC costs so it shouldn't come as a surprise any more.

Not quite, the surveying company are the merchant! They will be passing on (an approximation of) the costs involved in accepting payment in this way, largely costs paid to their card acquirer....

I think Bris is referring the 'merchant service provider' which is the card learning company.

What do you want us to say?

The company told you about the charge BEFORE processing the transaction so they have not cheated you in any way.

I can't see why this is an issue big enough for you to feel it necessary to join a forum to ask about it.
