Perhaps the gearbox oil has leaked out or is low. I'd get the oil replaced and avoid high rpm through the gears and should hopefully not get any worse.

    +1

A Change of gear oil with fresh stuff and something like a Slick 50 gearbox additive is what i would be doing.

I wouldnt be replacing / refurbishing a gearbox just for a slight whine.

I had a 48 hour test drive of a DS4 with this ESG gearbox two years ago and it was awful. Infact, it was dangerous.

You'd roll upto a junction/roundabout, spot a gap and pull out. The thing would hessitate and couldn't decide what gear it wanted, revved, pull away, then hesitate again between gear changes. By which point the gap you'd pulled into had gone from 300 yards down to 10 and the driver behind wasn't impressed.

its the same with ecotronic on the Vauxhalls but that one hesitates between gear changes as standard like your catching the brake pedal by accident in a clutched manual car.

If memory serves from the older type petrol and diesel boxes on the Citroen Peugeot lines, once the Differential bearings starts to whine, then no amount of oil changes and snake oils will aid in reducing the inevitable and that's eventual bearing failure although in the pug 307 my father had, we had about 9 months and 7k miles out of it before my dad spent £1.2k on having the same gearbox refurbished new 3 piece clutch fitted and I reckon we could have got at least another 3-6 months out of it after that, it sounded like a tin can caught in a bike wheel but other than that it still went in gear and still pulled away.

but I would be prepared for it to go any time, but start to put cash away when you can as you can to have it done as soon as you've saved the ball park figure specialists are giving you.

The AA offer an 'Breakdown repair' service. If they cannot fix the car at the roadside, they'll pay up to £500 for repair. Plus in my experience the AA guys are very good at getting the diagnosis right and will be able to recommend a trustworthy local garage.

Read the small print though, I'm sure they will have a clause to say you cannot claim within 30 days of opening a new account etc...But if your car is still running, now is the perfect time to join before it breakdown completely!!

So you expect a warranty to cover a known pre-existing fault?

Yeh, dream on. Unless you're suggesting fraud.

Wow, this has happened to me quite a few times, usually at roundabouts, when I know the car is more than capable of fitting in to a gap, but by the time it has thought about what gear it wants to be in, then the gap has closed, leading to various flashing lights, horn blasts and hand gestures:T

You would be surprised how often I have heard this suggestion over the past few days,
I had an extended warranty on a previous car, I have learnt from experience that they are not worth the paper they are printed on, there is more small print stating exclusions than actual benefits.

At the end of the day, they're a bet that your car is going to be significantly less reliable than average - after all, they make a profit from money in (premiums) minus money out (claims paid, running costs, marketing, salaries etc)...

I don't have any advice, but was rather amused at "more squeaks than a bag of squirrels" :)

I had a description more explicit, but figured swear words would get me banned lol :rotfl:
