  • As regards the camera - most recommend not using them in minus temperatures but they will usually work anyway. I go high altitude mountaineering with a canon ixus digital camera and it works fine even at temperatures of around -30. The problem is that the battery will freeze up in the cold, so make sure that you keep the camera inside your layers or wrapped up so that it stays warm, and also carry a spare battery as they don't last anywhere near as long in cold temperatures

    hope that helps!
  • If you have small children put their gloves on elastic this way they will not lose them, my daughter has been skiing since she was 4 and at 11 still has her gloves on elastic - not cool but very practical !

We also have neoprene face masks for very cold and snowy days and also full face balaclavas.

I also have silk thin gloves for underneath my ski gloves for those very cold days.

We've found all in one ski suits to be a bit of a nuisance, not so bad if you're a boy but not so good when you're a girl !
I would stick with trousers and get salopettes if you have a problem with falling down trousers, there's nothing worse than becoming "untucked"

Have a great time ! We're off as usual at Xmas where we feel it is more "Christmassy" than at home !:o
  • Loads of great advice - moneysavers obviously spend their savings on ski holidays!

    Here's my tip:

Boots are the thing that will make or break your holiday. If you arrive saturday pm - go straight to the rental shop. It should be less busy than Sunday am when EVERYONE goes.

You can take your time and get the right boots. Try a few pairs on to make sure they're comfortable.

Oh - try and leave them in a nice warm place overnight - warm plastic is more maleable so boots are far easier to pull on in the morning!

    Have a great time!
  • Hello

Has any one any advice on appropriate sunglasses for going skiing - brands type etc.

    Thank you
  • Hi Aldi have a ski adult sale on this thurs 29th November with thermals ski glasses suits etc, good value on the glasses.
We always use a shop called Decathlon which is fantastic value for all sports wear but great for skiing, kids up to 14 year old ski suits for approx £15.
Lidl had a sale of ski stuff this week, I bought my daughter ski helmet for £6.99 and goggles for £3.99 a pair
We go to France for all Christmas and Easter and all the children and adults have decathlon clothes their own brand is Quecho. i bought salopettes and Jacket for 8 year old in the sale for £8 and the snow boots for playing around in are less that £10. They also sell good value layers . The gloves are good value as my lovely girl always manages to lose one.:j

    Fificus,

I've always found that wrap round/larger lensed sunglasses are better than classic 'ray ban' shapes as the air flows round the eyes better when ski-ing rather the into the eye causing it to water. Also don't go too dark on the lens as you will need to use them when it is overcast as well. And plastic lenses are preferable, a brown/gold/yellow lens will give better definition to the terrain in lower light levels.

I now have Oakley 'straight jacket's' c.£60. There's no need to pay this and a cheaper option is something from the 'look alike' Bloc range. Both have good quality optics.

If you look round you could find something at the supermarkets that would do the job for a fraction of the price. Have a look at Ellis Brigham for some ideas http://www.ellis-brigham.com/goggles-and-glasses.htm

If it is snowing there is no substitute for goggles and here I'd say Bloc are the best value for money.
