Can someone explain why this is a blow to the UK Government's plans please? Preferably someone who isn't an idiot.

I think this is an opinion with a rationale along these lines.....Some of the things that the Tory right are hoping for would require a treaty change. While not directly affecting UK (as has been said its a Euroland agreement), the DEU/FRA agreement does not need a treaty change. Ergo, any treaty change would be for the UK's benefit. If there was a wider agreement that several things need to change that require a treaty amendment, it would mean that there would be a multinational debate on a revised treaty and easier to get what Cameron is seeking.

I would not call it a blow, but it does not help him negotiate.

So in your opinion, the leaders of the EU are so vain and shallow , that they will be influenced by 'attitude' rather than the welfare of the people of the EU?

Who would wish to be a member?

    Not what I said.

If Cameron wants to "win" he has to stop posturing to the anti-Europe wing of his party and UKIP and focus on making achievable demands that the other EU leaders could accept without losing face. He needs to be able to say we have come to a reasonable compromise which I recommend the electorate supports.

Your expectation is what? that he can say the great leader has beaten these idiots into submission?.:)
