Refused for a piddly £26/Mnth mobile phone contract

Confused, Angry, Disappointed.....
Shell-shocked just about summed it up.....
This may sound like a rant, apologies for that, but any advice any one can offer is more than welcome and perhaps it would be nice not to know i'm the only one.
So I had my old pay monthly contract with T-mobile (now EE in some form or another) since 2010, going through usual upgrades ect but unfortunately couldn't get a phone I wanted on upgrade this time with the contract ending within 2 months. Rather than carry on I decided to cancel, 30 days notice no problems and retained my number on a PAYG so I still have my old phone at least.
Tried to arrange a new contract with Virgin Mobile, a whole £2 more/mnth than previously, to be turned down..... rejected!
Would like to add, I had a contract with Virgin pre-Tmob and have been giving them just shy of £85/mnth for one of their TV/B_band bundles + extra's for the last 3 years, then to be given this... well I'l be polite and just say "slice of disappointment" just beggers belief:
We're really sorry but we weren't able to complete your order this time. At Virgin Media, we carry out a credit assessment before we finalise your order.
Unfortunately, this assessment has meant you won't be able to choose that particular phone. But you can take your pick from a selection of other great value phones and still enjoy the same tariff.
(Small note the spelled Finalize wrong)
and further:
If you'd like to find out more about how we assess each application, you can. Simply write to our credit reference agency, Equifax, for a copy of your credit file. This costs £2.
I was heard to utter, "are you f***ing kidding?"
Now i'm no way in any financial difficulty, not by any stretch. I do have a default on a Barclays account from back in august 2010, due to some personal issues, but since then nothing. That's the only blemish on my file to date. (I'l be carefully checking with Equifax to make sure it matches with Noddle when it updates in a few days)
I have a good job on good money, have half my wages at the end of every month to do with as I please, have some very manageable credit card debt (I could clear this completely in 3 frugal months), no missed payments since 2010, longest credit relationship on file goes back to 2009 with several more back to 2010.
I could outright buy the contract in one lump sum, but why should I have to, and have my bank account take an instant hit like that, especially when I know several people a lot worse off than me without this sort of headache? (and heartache if I'm honest, it really did knock me off my perch!)
Quite nervous about going to other companies at this point too, just in case I get the same sort of nonsense.
Not sure what the impact would be on my credit file either, I've been seriously considering getting a new car and a mortgage within the next few years after that default vanishes.
All things considered, to me the system just doesn't seem to make any sense!

you obviously dont match the criteria that Virgin mobile are looking for.
If you can afford to buy it outright, why dont you?

As above. You can't force companies to do business with you - British Gas won't take new customers on credit meters unless they have above average credit history.

Finalise is perfectly acceptable.0 -
I found myself in a similar situation so I bought my Iphone 5c and I pay £7.50 a month with GiffGaff for my contract in the long term its saved me a fortune and GiffGaff are great plus no credit file as its PAYGDMP 2021-2024: £30,668 £0 🥳

Make sure you cancel the TV / Broadband. It works both ways.0

Finalise is the British spelling and finalize the US. Both are acceptable these days, but I've only ever seen finalise in letters/emails from UK companies.
Lots of people start threads on here because they're upset they've been declined after a credit check. Usually they're people who have a blemish free credit history. Is it unusual for people with a default and late payments showing on their file to be declined for a phone contract? I'd have thought it would be the sort of thing you'd expect to happen from time to time until they dropped off.0
