Hi
I am buying softwood skirting from travis perkins , i plan to gloss it pre-install (a bedroom) can i just gloss straight onto the wood , or do i need to prime it ?

Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night.

As above
Prime, undercoat and 1 or even 2 coats gloss with light sanding between each coat. Preparation is the key to a good finish. You may even need to use knotting solution depending on the quality of the wood0
