hopefully it isnt either of the turbos, whilst itd be a warrant claim if they went I am guessing it isnt a quick/ easy job to fix them and could lead to other debates on what is collateral damage.

Upon further investigation we have discovered:

    1) still makes the noise with the AC off
    2) still makes the noise when the car is in neutral and moving
    3) still makes the noise when the car is stationary and in neutral
    4) noise gets louder and higher pitched as the revs go up
    5) trying to phone Mercedes at 6:30pm after a bank holiday is pointless

Didnt retry with the transmission in Park but no one suggested it so not sure if it'd tell anything anyway.

I'd definitely be looking at the belts around the front of the engine.

I think the relevant bit there might be "6.30pm"...

No, won't make much difference. Unless you're trying to put it in P with the car moving. That'll make a BIG difference...

I have a similar noise on my 07 Grand Picasso, although the car still runs ok, there is a god awful noise as I increase my speed from 30mph, a whirring, clacking noise you could say.
I took my local garages techie out on the road yesterday, and it is pointing at a gearbox bearing, a very expensive, labour intensive job, in fact my garage refused to take the job on.
Citroen have quoted me £900 just to remove the gearbox and diagnose. Plus £90 to run a diagnostic check, even though it doesn't need one. Then add on cost of required parts etc..
Various other garages in my area have also said "we wont do the job, but we would say 1k to 1.5k etc etc.
Worst case scenario, new gearbox would cost around 2k.

Thankfully the noise is annoying rather than awful and it is definitely linked to RPM not speed.

Do 60mph in 7th gear and RPMs are sub 2,000 and no noise that you can hear. Do 50mph in 2nd gear and RPMs are over 2,000 and noise is very evident.
  • Sorry for 'jacking this but I had this exact problem only the noises were definitely coming from the transmission (left, not timing belt) side, mostly behind the dash, a lot below and sometimes faintly, even above the engine. Car needed work so I scrapped it. Ran fine otherwise.

I had a similar problem too. I got the car crushed and have never had a problem since.

So supposedly the bearing for the pulley for the auxiliary belt has gone dry which is what causing the noise. They dont know why its done it so are going to replace it but the parts currently in Germany.

Doesnt sound something that I should be massively concerned about?

You mean the pulley on the auxiliary belts tensioner?

no nothing to really worry about. Bearings do dry up over time. One of the perks of owning a car.

Wouldn't be concerned if its a matter of days, but if its a Mercedes part going on back order, (like many others) I'd be drumming my heels to get to the front of the queue and curse their accountants cheese-paring on parts, again.
