House cold in summer.. too well insulated! Help.

Hi
This is a bit of a random one but looking for some advice.
We'll soon be moving to my parents house and they had loads of work done to get it insulated on the outside to keep the heat in. In the winter it's absolutely fab and once the house is toasty warm it stays warm but in the summer it's always cold!
The windows aren't huge so the heat of the sun doesn't get in much. It's not exactly a dark house but it's cold in there and they have to put the heating on even on the pretty warm days to keep warm.
It's absolutely ridiculous that the heating is needed to keep the house warm when the outside is lovely!
What can we do as he amount of heating oil we'll be saving in the winter will be outweighed by the amount well have to use in the summer!!!

How cold is cold? Our house stays cool but I regard it as a blessing. I can sleep under a 13 tog duvet year round.

it hasn't been much more than16c outside so it's not going to be more inside.
I really don't think you have a problem, a few weeks and you'll be wishing for 16c inside.0 -
Perhaps the house doesn't have that much of a south facing aspect, in which case temperatures inside will come up more slowly than a property like mine, which has quite a lot of glass facing due south.
Even in my house, the kitchen and two bedrooms, which face north, remain cool throughout most summer days. I like that.
You might install solar panels to give some free energy in the summer to offset the cost of boost heating via electricity, but of course, that won't be free until the outlay of around £5.5k is paid-off.0 -
Could be worse, mine is freezing all year round0

We had that problem. I had to go out into the garden to get warm once the sun was higher than the windows.
However, last year our new conservatory gets lovely and hot, with its doors open into the house providing a marvellous thermal boost.
It's an expensive solution, though, and probably not practical for the OP.Member #14 of SKI-ers club

My home is the same, it's a post WWII bungalow with small windows. Insulating the loft and the cavities has meant it is now cool in summer. The previous owners built a ramshackle glass lean-to ("Conservatory" would make it sound impossibly grand for what it is) off the lounge, what I can do on nice days is open the doors through to it and warm air comes flooding in to warm the place upProud member of the wokerati, though I don't eat tofu.Home is where my books are.Solar PV 5.2kWp system, SE facing, >1% shading, installed March 2019.Mortgage free July 20230

Ours is cold in the winter and the summer. We often have to put on more layers when we come in from outside. Fortunately we also have a conservatory and, as others have said, this warms the house up when it is sunny.0
