Ex-Council Flats - Pros and Cons

I'd make sure to check the history of whatever block you are interested in with regard to any major work already been carried out. It seems like an awful lot are coming up for essential maintenance in the next few years, and a lot have already had it done - obviously which makes a big difference.
I happened upon this report of a (the) tower block in the middle of Basidon - it is a Grade II listed 60's block in a shopping precinct and it makes interesting, if somewhat alarming reading in parts.

I'm not saying it is in anyway comparable to whatever you are looking at, but it may expand some of the cons/pluses on your list. Especially those concerning cost, potential behaviour of tenants, suitability for families etc.
SPCome on people, it's not difficult: lose means to be unable to find, loose means not being fixed in place. So if you have a hole in your pocket you might lose your loose change.0 -

Thanks for that SP. This is a much bigger complex than the block I'm considering but some of the content is still very relevant and may be of interest to others who happen upon this thread. Rather than me attempting to extract the bits people might find interesting, I've added your link into my OP so that the fuller detail is in one place.

I purchased one just under 2 years ago. My only complaint with a neighbour was with another leaseholder who rents his flat and his most recent tenants like to have parties. Think neighbours is luck of the draw regardless of who owns the property.
There were talks of some major works which was also a big concern but they sent loads of paperwork and quotes and one can oppose it. They didn't go ahead with it last year but may come up at some point. As previously stated, you get notice and the council offers you a few options including a discount if you decide to pay all within a certain time or they can also loan you the money interest-free for 12 months. Guess this will vary though.
I had a couple of minor issues in the property and speaking to the council is not always straight forward but I just try again until I get someone that can actually help and has some common sense.
In my opinion the cost and size of property has been worth it.0
