I once shared a day with some poor 10/11 year olds, forced to wear grey hats with yellow bobbles on for "easy recognition" during outings.
Far from 'protecting' them, the weird headgear provoked some very un-PC responses.

We banned conkers on an ad-hoc basis whenever the number of shoe-lace thefts rose beyond a tolerable level. "Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime!"
Otherwise, they were OK in my time at school.
High vis jackets make some sense, especially in activities like orienteering, where it's all too easy to lose a few, or even a dozen.
