No Gas! Should I Pay Rent?

If you read my previous post you'll see that we have had lots of problems with our landlord, first he fitted a boiler, he wasn't corgi registered so we got someone to inspect it and it was infact a dodgey job, so he had to get it replaced by a Corgi Official.
Now the corgi guy came out done the new job, and all was well but the landlord hasn't paid him. Today he came out and cut the gas off and said if the landlord dont pay the police are coming next time.
His rent was due on the 30th but we didnt pay it because my boss didnt give me the cheque till the 1st, i got it in the bank and it cleared today so i was going to pay him in full. But now we have no gas, we have already put up with 5 days with no gas when national grid cut of the gas before (about 2 weeks ago).
Should i pay the rent or what? I dont want to pay in full, this is a !!!! take. I cant even shower, cant cook and only have rent money to pay landlord.
Im sick to death of all this, were do i stand?

Could you pay the gas man and deduct it from the rent - then everyone's happy? Your landlord will be no worse off so he shouldn't complain. It is probably the quickest solution - if you wait for your landlord to pay it could take several more days. Some landlords are just too lazy and amateuish! If I had a pound for every time I didn't play the lottery...0

Does the gas man have the right to cut your gas off? I suggest a trip to the CAB to find out your rights here.(AKA HRH_MUngo)

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton0 -
yeah, pay the gas man, get a receipt (signed by gas man to say you paid), and deduct it from the rent.
You should definitely NOT pay the rent. Withold it until the gas is reconnected, then deduct the relevant proportion for all the days you were without gas.Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Phone the council up this afternoon and ask them if your house is inhabitable. Make sure you know who you have talked to and record the time of the conversation. (You want the envirnomental health department.)
If it is give notice quit in writing and tell your landlord in the letter who you spoke to at the council.
If it isn't you have to pay the rent.
Alternatively you can refuse to pay the rent because you are going to use that money to pay the corgi guy. However this is not legally without the landlord's permission.I'm not cynical I'm realistic
(If a link I give opens pop ups I won't know I don't use windows)0 -
The corgi guy wants way more then our rent is worth, we have £370 which is for the rent.
This is out of order, my girlfriend is in tears, its seems were stuck, we cant even eat because the food we have is to be cooked and we have no money to buy more food until 2 weeks, all we have is the rent money.
I just dont know what to do now, i can fone the council but at this present moment we need every penny, even a fone call that could be pointless is going to cost.0 -
go to CAB and get someone there to make all the phone calls for you0
-
Phone your landlord on a withheld number (dial 141 before you dial his number). Either that or go round to his house in the evening and demand the problem is rectified0
-
The gas man is not allowed to turn your gas off!
Turn the gas on yourself, and if the gas man comes back don't let him in and call the police if necessary.
If you see the gas man again, give him your landlord's address, and tell him to get his money from there and not to bother you again.
Then you can pay your rent.0 -
I'm pretty sure the Corgi guy can't turn your gas off - the gas supply company do that. He's exploiting the fact he knows where your gas supply switch is, and you don't (I'm presuming).
More than 370 for a gas inspection sounds suspicious - they're a lot less than that.Errors of opinion may be tolerated where reason is left free to combat it. - Jefferson0
