When will we get a completion date?

We are currently renting a house and just started the process of buying our own. However, we need to give 2 months notice to our Landlord of when we are moving out. At what point in the buying process do you normally get a completion date? And how much notice do you get, on average?

Thank you.

    The completion date is negotiated by all parties in the chain and is part of the contract exchange step. The time period between exchange and completion can be anything depending on the requirements of each party in the chain and the negotiation, from being on the same day to a number of weeks/months.

    Have a read of this MSE article which describes a simplified timeline and milestones of the buying process. It doesn't really factor in the complexities of a chain and the impact of that on the end to end process, but it is still useful as a guide.

    Here is also a MSE guide that refers to the likely buying fees & costs to factor in and when they may be due.

    Are you sure it is 2 months notice? Is your tenancy

    * fixed term? Dates?
    * SPT?
    * CPT?

    Read:

    * Ending/renewing an AST: what happens when a fixed term ends? How can a LL or tenant end a tenancy? What is a periodic tenancy?

    As for your purchase, are you using a conveyancer? I hope so, given your question. So tell your conveyancer you want a long gap (a month?) between Exchange and Completion.
