Can I claim this from HMRC?

Hi
in the Summer of 2013 I spent approx. £3K renovating the vacated family home before renting in November.
It's been in rental since but late in the day I need to notify HMRC and pay back tax.
Can I claim and reasonably expect to get an allowance for work done to bring house up to rental standard almost two years ago- I have receipts.
Will they deduct this from Tax due for period?
Thanks
Pauline

No, I don't think you can.
You can claim ongoing maintenance, but not a refurb at the start.
(The thinking being, that this is capital expenditure, similar to if you had spent that money on buying a house to rent out.)0
