New kitchen, belfast sink

We have just bought a new house, it's a new build. For the kitchen we have decided on grey tongue and groove doors, with laminate oak worktop and twin Belfast sink.
My kitchen fitter tells me the worktop is 600mm wide, does this mean this sink will not be right as its 660mm.?? He never said there would be any issues. Is 60mm not a big overhang??
IKEA worktops are 635 so the sink looks right in their pic...

There's no right answer - it's whether you're happy with a 6cm over hang, just personal choice.0

Stupid question, but are you sure it's 660 deep not 660 wide? That sounds quite big to me.
6cm overhang is probably manageable, but from the pictures I've seen of Belfast sinks they usually only overhang by a couple of cm.
The other problem you may have is where to mount the tap. If it's the full depth of the worktop you'll have to mount the tap to the side which might look odd. That is unless the tap is somehow mounted with the confines of the sink - but I've not seen that before on a Belast sink.0 -
i cannot understand what you mean????0

If you look at the sink I have linked to in my first post. This is an ikea sink, i was just wondering if this would be too big for a 600mm worktop...?0

Personally I think it would look quite odd, if you have your heart set on that sink is the worktop not available in 650mm width? Failing that I'd look for a similar sink in a more sensible size.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.0

The 6cm overhang would mean that the sink would appear the same as some of the photos on the ikea page - it looks like it is meant to overhang the cupboard.0

Have you any experience of Belfast sinks? First, they're quite deep so can give you a bit of a backache when doing the dishes. Second, they're quite 'clacky' - ie unforgiving of things hitting them eg glasses, ceramic cups, mugs etc. Thirdly, they don't drain well, so they're a pain to rince clear. So you end up using a plastic washing up basin - not pretty and takes off the look of the sink. Of course, you may be able to get shallow ones now which don't have these 'problems'.
Personally, I think they're a style choice rather than a practical one.
Sorry to be negative but having used a few while on holidays, I'd never have one.
And I was born in Belfast!0 -
Also, perhaps I could add the following.
The term 'deep' means, to me, 'away from me and towards me ( horizontally)'. Wide means 'left to right (horizontally)'. Tall, or high means 'top to bottom (vertically)'.
So the OP is using 'wide' where I would use 'deep'. Typically all kitchen worktops are 600mm deep (and any width.)
Just a thought.
Edit: OK I know, how deep (tall?) is the ocean etc.0 -
IKEA cabinets are deeper than standard units, so the overhang would be more than shown in the photos. I suggest you check that the outer side of the sink is actually glazed all the way back as if not you could have unglazed ceramic on show which would look unsightly.
You could also consider pulling you cupboards forward a couple of inches and fitting deeper worktops.0
