Internet Access in Spain with a mobile and a PC

I've already posted something about this in the Mobile board but thought it might be wise to copy it in here to see if anyone has any technical advice.

My Mother has moved to Spain (Almeria) and is living in a quite remote area with regards communication. She has mobile phone access, and it seems available with a couple of providers though coverage is a bit thin on the ground. She also has a computer. Essentially I’m trying to find a low cost (or at least lowest cost) solution so that she can get basic e-mail access and maybe some limited web access. It’s either that or a long drive over the Sierra! Does anyone have a solution? That is assuming I’ve posted in the right place!

Potentially this could provide a solution for a number of people in the area.

Thanks for any assistance you can give!:D

No personal experience of this in Spain but I doubt that it will be a low cost option, as mobile data is generally a rip-off other than for occasional use.

Oh this would only be for essential e-mails etc. It's still less fuss than a 30k drive!

You might be able to use the phone as a modem to access the internet, depending on the phone and the network provider. Post the exact make and models of computer and phone and the phone network.

You should be able to do it, however unless there's a Spanish noetwork that offers you an unlimited or high bandwidth limit bundle for a good rate then it will be prohibitively expensive.

My daughter has a friend in the Costa Blanca region where they cannot get broadband through Telefonica, what they have is broadband through MicroWave:D I know that sounds ridiculous but its true! If you want me to find out the name of the company just let me know.

Thanks for that! Given that some Electrical companies can provide broadband though the electrical cables, Microwaves I wouldn't be surprised at. Yes, If you have the details I'd be very grateful!:D

Microwave broadband is widely available in Spain. If all she wants to do is text then a much cheaper option would be SMS on the mobile. She can also receive and attach photos to keep in touch.

Although it is not what you asked, you might like to know there are several companies who offer cheap calls to UK from Spain.

Away from the coast, Almeria gets VERY hot in the summer and is quite cold on winter evenings
