can someone tell me why anyone plants pyrancantha?

It has the most horrible spines on it. Apart from wearing armor or chain mail whats the best way to prune this. As I am getting spiked and it really does hurt LOL!!!!

It's often planted as a security measure... a bush that's unlikely a burglar would wish to scale.

Yes I know. And when I bought this house there was a a very basic post and rail fence all the way around. the pyrancantha is only on a 6ft wide run of the fence at the bottom of the garden.

I now have a 6ft tall fence. So have no idea why they bothered to plant it. As its not even a really nice plant.

I am off out for weed killer tomorrow to deal with it once and for all. As I want it gone.

I used to collect the prunings and lay them over any dug ground to stop cats pooing. After a few years, I had quite a collection of stems covered in needle-sharp thorns :)

Thats the problem. And I am not sure if its just me or something the thorns are covered in. But I can still feel where I have pricked myself even now. And I was doing it at 4pm today :(

They grow in difficult places and the birds love the berries.

Doh why did I not think of that. I have a set.

Only problem is that I still need to put it in the car to take it away to the tip.

Very thick leathery type gardening gloves in future. Wonderful bright colours. The shrub not the gloves.
It gives autumn winter colour-don't get rid of it completely!

What I do with prickly things (I'm not a gardener) is I'll lop it with something, then use the blades to transfer the length of stuff to a trug, then I'll use the blades to cut it up smaller into the trug, so I don't have to touch it. Fiddly, faffy, but you don't end up all sad and hurt.
