B & Q - Garden Vac stopped working after 5 months - no reciept

Bought a Mac Allister Garden Vac from the Allington B+Q approx 5 months ago

I dont have a reciept and im not sure if I paid by card - I can check on Tue.
I tried it whenm I took it out of the box and it worked, put it in the shed.
Just went to use it, doesnt work, tried a different socket and new fuse

Took it back and they wont touch it without a reciept

Mac Allister is B+Q own brand I believe and it even gives their head office address (Chandlers Ford) on the unit!!

Store couldnt have been less helpful

What are my rights here? Do I have any?
AppreciAte they wont swap without reciept, but surely I have a way of escalating with manufacturer - which is B+Q!!

Not happy with our DIY friends at the moment....

You have no rights. You could have bought the item 2nd hand.

You need proof of purchase rather than a receipt. How did you pay? A bank statement would suffice.

Good luck with B&Q. Their customer service is pedantic. They prefer rules to people.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

Try another branch. My husband always throws away receipts, but has never had a problem getting a refund for faulty items (he seems to have a high failure rate with B&Q). If this fails, and you can't provide proof of purchase via a card statement, then you can only try to escalate your problem via social media or to more senior corporate management for a goodwill resolution.

If you ask nicely and can narrow down the day/date/time, some retailers will look through their merchant copies. Or even if you can remember the cashier that served you - it can all help narrow it down.

Sometimes these are only stored by your local branch for a limited time though (ie 6 months) before being sent to head office. And its relying on their goodwill also - they have no obligation to do the above.

Also I had a similar situation and managed to persuade them to give me gift vouchers . As said try another store. They hate giving cash so just go in with a bit of charm and see if they will give you gift vouchers .
In fact my technique when I've got money back for others is to ask to see a manager if they refuse , and allude to the fact you have got the receipt at home , you've just forgotten to bring it, ( in which case you'll bring it and they'll then have to refund you cash) . This gets them thinking and they gave me gift vouchers rather than lose the money later.
Of course this has to be done with total innocence as coming across as a threat wouldn't work..

No internet banking? You can view - and print off - your statements.

I do have internet banking but dont use it - no printer at home.

    All sorted.
I went into the Maidstone branch, explained that I had bought it at either there or the Allington one (true, theyre the only 2 I use, bar occasionally Gillingham) and I didnt have the reciept. They swapped it with a new one from the box.

Thankyou team at Maidstone, Sam and James.
