If anyone is familiar with the above motherboard...
I have a PC with the Asus M5A99X EVO R1.01 and for reasons I won't bore you with I want a spare of each component so that if it fails I can get it back up very quickly.
All I can find on ebay are Asus M5A99X EVO R2 ie the R2 version.
If I put this into my PC with all the original components will it work? ie same power connections, and will the OS boot up?
Just wondering if anyone who had the R1.01 upgraded to the R2....

It shouldn't make any difference. Motherboards tend to be reliable once they've begun use but even if it failed you could buy any AM3+ motherboard. Your motherboard allows processors up to 140 watts. Most motherboards only allow 95. What processor do you have?
Fans on graphics cards, however, can fail. If so you may be able to remove it & aim a cheap quiet case fan at it:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/STOREINBOX-80mm-Fans-Computer-Cooling/dp/B00S986ABI/ref=sr_1_7?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1428438731&sr=1-7&keywords=quiet+80mm+case+fan
If you can't remove the fan you could try breaking the fins of the fan. Try some pliers.
Change your processor's heatsink compound every 1-2 years. You can get some from ebay for £1.
How to remove & install a heatsink:

Enter your PC's BIOS & unplug the power cable for the processor's fan & put it back again to see if there are temperature changes. If so then you know the heatsink is properly connected.0 -
It's "AMD FX(tm)-6100 Six-Core Processor"
The use of this PC is extremely non-graphical - in fact it's running a version of Linux as a firewall.0 -
At http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/AMD/index.html
you'll see it's 95W.
You have the wrong PC: it seems your needs are far, far, far below what the processor is capable of. If you ebay 'AMD Athlon II X2 210e' you will find one of these dual cores for £10. It's 45 watts so you would save a lot of money in electricity.
The fastest 45W AM3 processor is the £40 4-core 'AMD Athlon II X4 610e'. There is also the 45W £19 3-core 'AMD Athlon II X3 405e'. They all work on AM3+ boards.
You could get £50 selling the fx6100 on ebay.
As for motherboards you could use any AM2 board. In fact I'm using one.0 -

Thanks for the advice prost. I haven't gone into details but it's a box supporting 40+ people, including handling VPNs, web filtering, snort amongst other things. I like to have a bit of headroom so I wouldn't say it's incredibly OTT0
