Can you use AMEX to pay mortgage/utility bills?

I have just got an AMEX and I am keen to use it to maximise the points I get each month.
With that in mind, can you pay your mortgage payments, energy bills, water bills, council tax using it?
If its possible it would be a massive boost to my monthly points but I can imagine some companies might not want you to use it because it implies that you might not have the money you are spending.
My mortgage is with Halifax and I am with First Utility for gas and elec.
Thanks

I'm not aware any mortgage company allows payment by way of any credit card let alone by Amex
best to check with your utility directly (read the bill or look online)
however most utility companies give discounts for paying by DD so you may be worse off even if they allow such payments0 -
I doubt you can pay any of this by CC, and if you could, they'd probably not accept AMEX and/or charge you extra for using a CC.
If you want the best deal, pay your bills by Direct Debit. Check out the Santander DD cashback to see whether it would be worth your while http://www.santander-products.co.uk/banking/calculator/123ca.html0 -

i am. but not by Amex, unfortunately. there is a thread here all about where you can spend with Amex--and i find very few places that you can't, and am a big Amex fan, as their CS is so good, and the cashback market-leading.
BUT though i can use Amex to pay for postage at the Post Office, i can't pay my Council Tax using Amex, even at the Post Office. so i've been using CapitalOne to pay this.
i pay my Water bill using CapitalOne (don't accept Amex) every 6 months, and pay for Electricity monthly by DD.
...other than that it's just 'shopping'.0 -
Talk Talk like you to have a Direct Debit set up, but when they send you the bill if you pay within 24 hours you get a 10% discount (& they do accept Amex for that). The direct debit never gets used if you choose to pay like that.Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0

why? not if a payment is accepted by the provider, as a purchase.0

Many utility providers will accept cards but are more likely to charge for Credit / Charge cards. Even if on Direct Debit, you may be able to 'topup' your account (by card) using their website.
That said, most mortgage providers will only accept credit cards in exceptional circumstances. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
