Multiple spring failures raise questions about the quality of the replacement springs.
As far as the tyre-piercing goes, had the car gone in for the recall?

I had a look at these cars yesterday but over £200 road tax pa hurts! If you always do what you have always done, you will always get what you always got!0 -
Although the Forester may be the ideal country lump, it's hardly small which is what the OP asked for.
From potholes.co.uk here are the pothole proof makes:
1
Honda
1.4%
2
Toyota
1.5%
3
Hyundai
1.7%
4
Nissan
2.0%
5
Kia
2.1%
6
Mitsubishi
2.2%
7
Mini
3.0%
8
Suzuki
3.1%
9
Ford
3.4%
10
Mazda
3.4%
So perhaps an Aygo or Civic?0 -

Whilst not small, its not a huge estate car by any means and I managed to thread it through country lanes with ease.
Am very tempted to get another one, but this time the STI version for a bit more back road fun.0 -
For sheer value the Dacia Sandero and the Stepway offer lots to the driver that just wants no frills motoring.
A new car also has no previous wear and tear from.previous owners.
I looked at a Sandero for the wife as a replacement for her Clio. Only reason I didn't buy was the 6 weeks wait quoted by the dealer.
Went to auction and got a 60plate 116D SE for less than the Sandero base model in white.
A shame because I think it would have been a reliable lump.0 -

But you'll never have to replace any parts and it will start first time every time. Its the only car you will ever need. Forget about the tax and see the bigger picture. Low tax will be low quality for the purpose you have listed, you don't go hill walking in ballet shoes- buy a proper car.0
