I reckon he is going for it big time so the government have time to recover before the next election. Prepare for a thousand cuts .... He seems determined to start asap !

Like a Company. Governments don't stop either. Budgets for Departments need to be set years in advance.

The biggest cultural change from all the cuts will be moving poor people further and further away from the heart of London. If property prices keep going up and benefits keep going down, some areas, for right or wrong, are going to see some big changes.

Plenty of people in years gone by have cashed in and used their London property wealth to buy somewhere nice in the Shires or the West Country. So nothing new there. In fact real Londoners are outnumbered I suspect.

DLA will be targeted and unfortunately those people who really need it will lose out due to those who use other excuses to claim. If you have lost a leg that is one thing, if you are just too fat to work that's another.

Neither of which stop people from working and earning a living.

Unimaginably, the Government want to take the size of Britain's Government relative to GDP back to where it was in 2001.

I'm sure we remember those days of people starving naked in the streets.

Yes but, no but....

Are we talking departmental spending as a share of GDP (ie excluding the ever increasing bill for old people and housing)?

Even if that is all we are talking about there is still the question of how it is distributed between departments with some 'ring fenced'.

Yes but of course in terms of actual spending in real terms we are talking about ~2%pa increase compounded over 14 years, an increase of 31%.

I think you mean non working poor people.

DLA isn't an out of work benefit, many people working both part and full time claim it.
