My plusnet phone not working
Comments

In my (limited) experience its unusual to have data and not voice as data requires a more resilient connection. If you're on fibre that may not be the case. If you have a dual primary socket have you tried a filter in between the socket and telephone
even on copper that is not correct
ADSL will work down one leg of a copper pair and for dial tone you need both legs of the pair to be good
so Dis one leg and ADSL can still work but no dial tone0 -
Interestingly when the BT engineer turned up at approx 1515hrs, he opened the manhole cover opposite to my neighbours house and, amazingly after a few minutes work, my phone suddenly started to work. I said nothing to him at the time.
After a few minutes, he came to my door to advise me that he had found a problem and then proceeded to disappear for a long time (I assume either to my phone & b/band cabinet or to my exchange). Whilst at my door, I advised him that my phone had started to work but he continued to insist that he had found a problem.
He returned to my place at approx 1600hrs and removed the manhole cover again.
During his visit, I continually lost my phone and b/band connections.
After 1700hrs, he returned to my door to advise me that he had fixed the problem (something to do with a battery causing me issues). He also advised me that his shift had now finished and he was going home.
I need to advise that I do find all of the above very suspicious. Wot does everyone else think as I am not an expert ?
I am liaising with BT and Plusnet to see if I will get compensation.
why would you find any of that suspicious?
the engineer tests the line and fault shows near your property, a quick test once onsite shows the line is disconnected in the joint box near your house, this is quickly fixed and then line test shows battery contact which may have been on the line for a long time but it was not affecting your service
as the engineer has worked on the line he needs to get a good line test to close the fault, so off he goes to clear the battery contact, whilst doing this he intercepts the line on a couple of occasions and as he does you lose dial tone and b/b
you are not an expert and obviously have no idea of the workings of a telephone line, when he said it was "something to do with a battery causing me issues" did you think he was talking about a duracell or a car battery :rotfl::rotfl:
just accept that your line is fixed and move on with your quest for compensation0 -
As already pointed out, you will not get compensation from BT because you have no contract with them. neither will you receive compensation from Plusnet, because there is no service level agreement on a residential line. You are entitled to a credit for the downtime only-that's it.
Really ?
I have been offered £25 compensation by Plusnet so effectively 2 months of free service lol !!0 -
That is not compensation, it's a goodwill payment..a good result but not something they had to offer you.No free lunch, and no free laptop

My understanding is a battery fault is a short between 1 wire in your line and 1 in someone elses, 1 wire will be battery the other earth. The automated test kit picked up a battery contact fault, which the engineer fixed
The battery in this context is 48v battery that is in the exchange, this is a constantly charged battery acting as a UPS, a lot of exchange kit is fed from this(i used a soldering iron fed from tjis, 20 years ago on work experience)0 -

the main cause of battery contact faults in the telephone network is Water, a wet cable or a wet joint will cause battery contact, also physical damage to the cable or damaged insulation in a joint or street cabinet will also cause a battery contact
what i was suggesting in my post was that the battery fault was a secondary fault and not what was causing the loss of service0 -
Who cares as long as I have made money out of it lol ? !!0
