We have upvc as we are similarly north facing and were told it wouldn't be an issue. But they still stick and I'm about to get someone to look at them. Don't know if they were fitted badly or not.

I think the post above #10 is probably true. If you can afford the really top notch systems I'm sure they are great, but I think those affordable for the average person tend to be problematic. If I was doing our extension again I'd consider doing it without bifolds. Don't get me wrong I love the fact that you can open the room right up, but I suspect that we will always have issues with them.

Yeah I've seen a lot about the fitting of bi-folds being the biggest causer of issues, which makes for another choice, do we pay for the company supplying to fit them, or fit them ourselves.

I've had quotes for uPVC systems (which we are going to see this weekend), and Aluminium, and even Aluminium Clad uPVC, the full Ally was the most expensive, around £2700, full uPVC cheapest at around £2150, with no difference in warranty. These particular bi-folds are going to be installed facing north, so an area which will never get any sun on it at any point during the day/year, so we may not suffer too badly with the expansion issues.

The issue I have with Aluminium, is the distinct lack of being able to achieve a low u-value. UKBiFold got to 1.5U for nearly £3k, yet for £2150 I can easily achieve 1.0U with uPVC, same with the Alu-Clad uPVC, and that's what's throwing me at the moment.

People with Alu sets, are they cold to touch, draw cold in to the room?

You will not notice any difference because of U value, even if it was double that quoted.

    They don't draw the cold.

They are slightly cold to the touch but that's not a problem is it unless for some strange reason you want to stand there day and night holding your nice new bifolds.

If I was doing it again I'd definitely get the manufacturer to do it rather than our builder.

Agreed, the firm we are buying from is supply only, but their regular fitter is taking on our job, and fitting for £170, can't say fairer than that, and he's been out and measured up etc.

Just out of interest is that U value correct?..1.7 is pretty poor but I guess thats the problem with Alluminium.
