Booking Holiday with Thomson

Hi guys

We booked a holiday to Turkey last week. We went into the superstore travel agents to book it. The total was £4270 as my husband asked for their best price and they gave us a discount of £220.

I looked online when we got home and it works out at £4070, £200 cheaper.

I emailed them as I thought they would price match it but they just told me you pay more in store for personalised holiday planning and their expertise.

Is there anything I can do or do I just learn from this and book online in future?

The holiday you booked did they find it you and how long did it take them? Did you know roughly what you wanted or had you no idea? If you could have done it yourself then you've wasted money, if they did a good job then you've paid for a service. Thomsons don't match their internet prices, if you go in with an internet printout they will do it at that price and charge you £25 for doing it. Another travel agent may have matched the internet price it depends what the percentage of discount is. Did they tell you, you need e visas for Turkey before you go and possibly worldwide insurance?
  • You just paid for someone to sit down and plan your holiday for you. Worth a little extra one might think?

Online is there for people who know what they want , or don't mind spending the time looking, hence prices are cheaper, as there isn't the costs of providing the walk-in service.

Thomsons will match their internet prices, but I always take a print out of the web price with me, sometimes there has been a small difference like £10.

We booked a thompsons holiday in store and there was definitely a £25 admin charge for booking in store - as another poster has stated - you are paying for a service. We didn't mind as we weren't getting anywhere booking online!

We managed to get it a lot cheaper in-store a couple of years ago.

They were able to 'de-package' the holiday and then re-package it at a substantial saving - IIRC around £800 cheaper on a 3.5K holiday.

Can't say I've managed it since though :)
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.
