Disproportionally high insurance - Can you check your file?

I've heard it mentioned that insurance companies hold a 'file' so to speak. Is this accurate?

I'm due my renewal and recalled my partner was close to his after mine so completed quotes for both cars.

We are very similar in details (address, age, licence and even car) however his insurance was coming out much higher than mine. This shouldn't be the case as I have a fault claim against me from last year, so if anything I should be higher.

I began to tweak at the quotes to the point the only real differance was the car (he has an 06 1.2 Punto, me a 03 1L corsa).

So, I changed his details to owning my car, his quote was over £100 more than myself, despite me having a claim and less no claims.

I know there is always a little difference, but I'm at a loss as to explain why his is consistently higher based on the details which is making me consider is there is some sort of 'marker' on him.

Is there a way I can find out? Or if you have any suggestions for the high differential, based on details I should be paying more than him, not the other way round

Shouldn't be complaining lol :j

    Job titles?

There's a reason why they ask..... Certain professions are considered high risk.

Whilst insurers are not allowed to use gender discrimination any more, but they CAN discriminate by profession, which essentially means they can charge more for typically male orientated professions.

Excellent tool. Can't believe I didn't spot that already.

However, there is only a £15 variance between the highest and lowest.

All your claims information is held on CUE - Claims and Underwriting Exchange.

It costs around £15 for your file to be sent to you. I had mine a couple of years ago just to confirm some information that I had previously mis-placed.

Interestingly none of my previous 4 recent windscreen claims appeared on this database.

Yes but your telling it your profession and it lists similar professions, not entirely different ones. The tool is meant to show you what you could potentially change your title to when taking out insurance.

^^ Might give you a better idea.

    So, I'm clearly going mad.

I decided to adjust his name. I thought, if it was linking his name, I'll try another to test it so he became george

    Lowest quote reduced significantly

Changed his name back to his own

Every company on his quote list has changed price.

I've double checked and the quote I did this morning is the same as this afternoon however the price's are massively different

    This morning - £612
    This afternoon - £449

Happy it's now lower, still very confused.

I'm going to check again tomorrow as it's bothering me.

It wouldn't surprise me if somehow the insurance companies had linked customer names to accident statistics. But I've had a quick search and didn't find anything to suggest it true.

I don't think the sex thing has had much affect, Adding a female driver instead of a male one still gets lower quotes.

Looking for unsurance for my daughter adding a female member of the family lower the quote where adding a male didnt.
