Ground floor flat or 2nd floor - which one?

I have a ground floor flat. No problem with noise. Love being able to walk out into the garden.
Tbh I think you could get noise anywhere - you need to look at the quality of the building, some just have terrible noise insulation. And maybe just wander round at times that are likely to be noisy to see just what the neighbours are like.
it's not just insulation, get a heavy walker above you and you'll hear it,no matter what sound proofing there is.
OP go 2nd floor.0 -
Ground floor, I would never live in a property without a garden, do people on here who say you can't open windows on the ground floor never open the windows one the ground floor of a house?
Think they mean at night, during the day is fine if you're in, going to bed with a window open on the G/F doesn't make for a restful sleep.0 -
I'm in a ground floor flat, chosen partly so I didn't have to worry about whether I was making too much noise for people below.
Windows are secure when open so that's not a problem and the street is very quiet at night. Obviously the location of the building can influence your decision.
Main downside actually is that I'm at the bottom of the names/buzzers outside the main door so I get all the people buzzing who want to get in like postmen; delivery if someone isn't in; meter readers etc.. And there seems to be a never-ending stream sometimes...
Other downside - everyone else has a better view than I do!0 -
My husband (retired Police Officer) advised our son not to buy GF as in his experience (CID SOCO) they do get more break ins. One of my sons bought a flat and the elderly man downstairs was a total nightmare, they couldn't walk across a room without him moaning and shouting. Son is now in a house. My other son lived in a groundfloor flat when he was a student and he hated that people were always looking in the windows and lots of noise as people congrgated by the door (I think they were smokers).Sell £1500

Lived on the ground floor of a purpose-built block for several years, no problems at all. It was on a quiet street near a town centre.
I think people worry about the security aspect of being on the ground floor too much, to be honest. Nobody ever seems to worry about their house having a ground floor!
Anecdotally, a policeman friend told me that the biggest risk with flats is people getting through the communal door. Once they're in, they can often get on with breaking into a flat in the block in peace!
Having said all that, I now live on the second floor of a different block and prefer that on balance, but more for the views and feeling of height than any worries about security.0 -
Not by design but I have always lived in ground floor flats. They've all be in cities and I frequently go out and leave a window open on a Saturday. In fact I once did it for a whole day whilst living in the Gorbals, and I haven't been burgled once.0

I'm on the ground floor any only have communal gardens around me, nothing private. I still open the bedroom window at night in the summer. I just stick to using the smaller panes or locking the bigger one in a semi-open position. It's fine.Saving for deposit: Finished! :j
House buying: Finished!

After having been flooded out in a GF Flat and the chaos it caused it would be top floor only.0
