Hi,

We are with Southern Elec at the moment but as I felt we were paying too much per unit, I checked USwitch to see if any other suppliers were cheaper. USwitch showed that we would save £160 a year with Powergen so I started the switch. Today, I have recieved some paperwork from Powergen and to my dismay, their prices are even dearer than southern elec!

Well, they are more expensive unless there is a difference between units and kilowatt-hours?

Southern elec are charging the first 346 @ 14.00p & the rest at 9.38p per unit. Powergen are charging the first 225 kilowatt-hours @ 16.32p & the rest @ 9.36p. Powergen's figures include VAT but I don't think the Southern elec figures do as VAT is added on afterwards in the bill.

I would be really grateful if someone can have a look at these figures and let me know if moving will be a mistake!!

    For electricity a unit is a kWh. For gas the units need to be converted to kWh before calculating the cost. Enter you details into ukpower and you will get the unit prices if you click on the cost box.

    For Gas to work from units to KWH, for an example we'll use 250 units

    250*calorific value (around 39.2, tis on your bill)*1.02264/3.6

    So that would be - 2783

    easy peasy ;)

    and then to turn it into ££££

    Imperial Pre Calculation: Units (feet cubed) x 2.83 = Meters cubed (truncate to 2 decimal places, i.e. don't round up)
    Bill Calculation:
    kWhs (truncate to 2 decimal places) = Meters cubed x Calorific Value x 1.02264 (the Volume Conversion Factor) / 3.6
    Tier 1 = Number of days billed x 12.526 (daily threshold) x tier 1 unit price excl. VAT (for payment method)
    Tier 2 = Total kWhs used - Tier 1 kWhs x tier 2 unit price excl. VAT (for payment method)
    VAT = Tier 1 cost + Tier 2 cost x 0.05
    Total cost = Tier 1 cost + Tier 2 cost + VAT

  • Also remember that if you are changing to the Powergen Online Saver, you then get an 18% discount deducted at the end of the bill.

  • Using the unit costs you have supplied, the cost per supplier based on an average 800 units per quarter would be:

    Southern Electric :
    346 X 14.00 = £48.44
    454 x 9.38 = £42.58
    vat = £ 4.62
    Total = £95.64

    Powergen Online (inc vat)
    225 x 16.32 = £36.72
    575 x 9.36 = £53.82
    sub total = £90.54
    less 18% =(16.29)
    Total = £74.25

    Powergen Saving = £21.39

  • Also remember that if you are changing to the Powergen Online Saver, you then get an 18% discount deducted at the end of the bill.

    The OP may not get 18% as the discount varies on which region you live in.
