Insurance

does anyone have any recomendations on insurance for my belongings whilst at university, I also am a bit confused as to what I need, do I simply add up the replacement costs of everything I will have and Insure that value, what sort of things should I put on specified items?

I've also used Saxon Insurance, http://www.saxoninsurance.com/ - underwritten by Norwich Union and have always come out much cheaper than Endsleigh. They offer a standard £10,000 in-room belongings coverage and you supplement that with whatever extras you need.

Laptops typically are insured as an add-on piece of the policy and that will cover them wherever they are with you in the UK (usually).

You can often specify extra personal possessions you want covered anywhere in the UK (out of room basically :)) - this might be iPod, digital camera, glasses, etc. that you're often carrying round with you.

As always check the policies, limits and excesses to make sure whatever you take out meets your needs.

and that includes a computer as standard...... that's actually really good! i have to admit to never having bought insurance as the quotes i saw required extra to cover computers, which is really most of what i wanted it for!

one thing to check before getting anything is whether or not you will be covered by your parents contents insurance, as i know i was for my undergrad 3 years - this will oviously vary a lot by policy/company.

i've just read the T&Cs for saxon and could really use the advice of someone who knows more about this (*smiles sweetly at crispyUK*). i recently had something taken from my room by a then housemate (all very ugly and with the police now!), and was told that standard insurance policies would not have covered it as there was no 'forced entry'. i can't see anything about that in saxon's T&Cs specifying that....... but i may not be reading it right!

I'm not sure what the situation is there with Saxon if I'm honest.

I know Endsleigh advertise that they will cover you if there's no signs of break-in, sometimes called a walk-in burglary which I suspect what yours is classed as, not all regular home insurance policies will cover this type of theft.

When my brother went away to university he was covered on my parents house insurance as he hasnt bought anything else, it was just moved to a different location.

We were with direct line and my parents just had to let them know that some of it would be in student accomodation and they were fine with it. (or so I remember...)
