Driving from Milton Keynes to Newport, Wales - Any routes to take/avoid?

If avoiding the Toll is important, and it is charged whichever Bridge you use, the new one or the old one at Chepstow, the way to avoid it is via Gloucester - going then south-west along the north bank of the Severn Estuary - to Chepstow, re-join the M4 and head for Newport.
Dangers - it's a slower route, and has more potential for missing turnings e.g. Gloucester way.
The route planner should give you an estimate of time - add on a large margin especially the first one.I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0
