CcJ - 5 years old.

Hi guys, hope you are all well, I had a little question to ask you, I am trying to tidy up my credit file and have now paid all of my debt off which was about 5k, but I have one ccj left to pay which was from 2010, the debt was given to me by my old workplace for overpayment of wages, I left suddenly as I had mental health problems and just had to get out there and for about 4 years I didn't even open a single letter then moved and it was all a huge mess. In fact that was the last employed job I had, Iv been self employed ever since.

My question is this, iv read In places that my debts get removed off my credit file after 6 years, so do I pay this debt? And if I do pay it will it restart for another 6 years on my credit file? I now am I'm a good financial place so don't need to use credit, but I'd like to know my options x

There is no 6 year time limit when it comes to a CCJ unfortunately, you will have to pay the debt.

    Hi Mrspaintpot,

Good to hear you are in a good position financially now.

A county court judgment will come off your report automatically 6 years from the date it's recorded.

This will happen whether it has been paid or not, and starting to make payments won't change the length of time it appears on the report.

The CCJ itself would still be outstanding though, even if lenders can't see it when they search your report after the six years.

    Kind Regards

Just to clarify this a little further. OP, just be aware of the legalities around the enforcement of CCJs after 6 years. The debt itself doesn't simply disappear after the 6 years.

If a CCJ is more than six years old from the date of judgement, then the debt itself is still enforceable even if the CCJ drops off from reports produced by Credit Reference Agencies. However, if the creditor wants to enforce the debt after 6 years (by using bailiffs or High Court Enforcement Officers), then they must first obtain a court order.

Bit confused. Was vodaphone your employer?

If you don't have a copy of the judgement then you can get one from the court that issued it. That is what I would do first.
