Do most retail outlets accept Amex?

I've never had an Amex card before, but I'm thinking of getting one because it's the top recommended cashback credit card on the site...
Do most retail outlets accept Amex? I'm sure this isn't a problem, because otherwise it would have been flagged up as part of the recommendation, but I just thought I'd check here for added reassurance.
Thank you.

Wilkinson, Home Bargings, Aldi, Screwfix, 99p stores (they sell much more expensive stuff too), ..., many online companies (e.g. Dunelm - don't know abut stores, Craghoppers, Eurocarparts, TV Licensing, ...).
If you use Amex you must have a second credit card on you. Before I was forced to Amex by Barclaycard I used to have only one CC and one debit card in my small wallet.0 -

As others have mentioned, you will need a secondary Visa/Mastercard for the places that don't take Amex, however the majority of places where I would guess people tend to spend the bulk of money do.
For our usage for example, over the past year we've put approximately 70% of our spending on Amex and the remaining 30% on a Mastercard (solely used for places that don't take Amex), we most commonly find that independent restaurants/takeaways/pubs are the biggest hold-outs against accepting Amex, then with the occasional big-names where we don't actually spend money that frequently (BT, HMRC, The Range, and a few others).0 -

I find when shopping online stores that don't accept Amex often accept PayPal which can be linked to your Amex card anyway0 -
My 'in short' is 'no'.

Wilkinson do now but I agree some of the more budget chains dont. A good tip with online shops is to pay by PayPal with your Amex if they don't take Ames but do PayPal.0
